Law firms are usually comprised of multiple attorneys, frequently with specialties in different areas. When a business is choosing a law firm there are many things to research first. A business will want to choose a law firm that will best represent their interests. For example, a logging company would not want to chose a law firm that usually fights for environmental issues because it would represent a conflict of interest. Also, because law firms have many different attorneys representing that firm, the business in search of a law firm, would want to research each attorney that would be representing them. Research will also help a business decide which law firm has the highest success rate in representing a business of similar type.

While some businesses simply keep individual lawyers on retainer, most utilize the experience and expertise of a law firm. However, businesses are complicated by nature and have many different interests to look after. For example, if a business has an individual lawyer on retainer, rather than a law firm, and that business gets sued by a client, they may find that their lawyer has no experience in lawsuits. However, in most law firms, you can find at least one lawyer with experience in most legal arenas that a business will encounter. Law firms are made to be sure that their clients are covered, no matter what their legal difficulties.

Hiring a law firm can also be advantageous to a business because with multiple lawyers representing them, they often have more bargaining power and also confidence in what they do, since their law firm will usually advise them as to questions of law. When a business has a law firm on retainer, they may have lawyers from that firm check over contracts and other important documents to be sure that their interests are looked after. Big business may also utilize their law firm to go over their finances and taxes to ensure that they are not breaking any laws.

It is important to note how extensive each law firms experience is in working with businesses and especially businesses of comparable size. A large business of 5000 people would not want to choose a law firm that has only worked with small business and vice verse. The interests of small companies vary greatly form those of a large company.

Although it may be more expensive to keep a law firm on retainer versus an individual lawyer, for most businesses the benefits outweigh the cost. With a law firm, the business can be sure that they have lawyers with experience in taking care of all of their legal interests. The business will have confidence that their lawyers will be able to represent their company in the manner they expect. While an extremely small business may prefer to keep an individual lawyer on retainer, it makes sense for big business to utilize the services of a law firm. Because big business has multiple interests, it only makes sense that they would have multiple lawyers to look out for those interests.
